Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a measles IgG and a measles IgM test?
The measles IgG and IgM tests are both blood tests used to detect antibodies to the measles virus, but they serve different purposes:
- Measles IgG Test
- Purpose: Detects IgG antibodies, which indicate past exposure to the measles virus or vaccination.
- Timing: IgG antibodies appear a few weeks after infection or vaccination and provide long-term immunity.
- Usage: Used to determine immunity status, confirm previous infection, or assess response to vaccination.
- Measles IgM Test:
- Purpose: Detects IgM antibodies, which indicate a recent or current measles infection.
- Timing: IgM antibodies are the first to appear after infection, usually detectable within a few days to weeks after symptoms start, and they decline after a few months.
- Usage: Used to diagnose acute or recent measles infection.
In summary, the IgG test checks for long-term immunity, while the IgM test identifies recent or ongoing infections.
How and when will I get my test results?
Results are typically available within a few days. For patients booking their blood test through Travel Health, we will send the results to you by email. For patients referred by a private testing service for blood drawing and centrifuging, your results will be given by the provider you have booked with. Your healthcare provider will discuss the findings and any necessary next steps with you.
Will Travel Health analyse my blood test results?
We do not analyse blood test results or provide a diagnostic blood test service. However, we will be happy to send your results to a GP or health practitioner on your behalf.
