Schools are out for summer, and we’re entering one of the busiest months for overseas holidays. If you’ve grabbed a cheap last-minute deal to an exotic destination, it might be tempting to pack your bags and head off without much planning.
While booking your flights and accommodation can be done quickly, protecting your health should involve no short-cuts. Visiting a travel vaccine centre, even at short notice, can make all the difference between a safe, healthy trip and a holiday ruined by illness.
At our Travel Health, we offer same-day appointments for both travel and everyday vaccinations, so you don’t need to miss out on essential protection, even if your trip is just days away.
Why Last-Minute Travellers Still Need Vaccines
When you hear ‘travel vaccines’, you might associate them with months of preparation.
However, although some vaccines are best given weeks in advance, many still offer valuable protection even if administered shortly before travel.
Diseases such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Meningitis ACWY and Rabies can be present in popular holiday destinations across Asia, Africa, South America and even parts of Europe. These illnesses don’t discriminate between travellers who plan well and spontaneous adventurers – and some can be life-threatening.
Peace of Mind Before You Fly
Our clinic offers same-day appointments for most travel vaccinations, so you can get protected even if you’re leaving within the week.
Some vaccines, like Hepatitis A or Typhoid, start providing protection within days. Anti-malarial tablets can also be started just before departure, depending on the type prescribed. While it’s always best to have vaccines in advance, some protection is always better than none.
We also provide combination vaccines such as Hepatitis A & B, which can save you time and visits if you’re in a hurry.
Common Destinations and the Vaccines You Might Need
In summer, many travellers from the UK head to:
- Thailand, Vietnam, Bali. In these countries, there’s a risk of Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis in rural areas.
- Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana. A Yellow Fever certificate is often required and there’s a risk of Malaria and Hepatitis A.
- Brazil, Peru, Argentina. Yellow Fever is common in some regions, as is Hepatitis A, and Typhoid.
- Turkey, Egypt, Morocco. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are commonly recommended.
More Than Just Vaccines
While vaccinations are key, when it comes to protecting your health, it’s vital to have complete protection. At our clinic, we also offer:
- Anti-malarial medication, such as Malarone or generic alternatives, with both adult and paediatric options.
- Travel health advice covering food and water safety, insect bite prevention, and sun protection.
- First aid guidance, particularly useful for families or those visiting rural areas.
Our goal is to help you leave the UK confident that you’ve reduced your risk of illness as much as possible.
Why Our Private Vaccine Centre is Different
Many travellers put off visiting their GP because they assume it will take weeks to get an appointment, by which time it’s too late. Our private service operates differently, with:
- Fast appointments, often the same or next-day.
- A wide range of vaccines, including Yellow Fever and Rabies, which not all GP surgeries stock.
- Extended hours, making it easier to fit around work and family life.
- Expert travel health advice. Our nurses specialise in this area, so you get accurate, up-to-date recommendations.
For those travelling for work or volunteering, we also offer occupational vaccinations such as Hepatitis B, DTP, and Pertussis.
The Cost of Skipping Protection
Falling ill abroad can not only ruin your holiday. It often means expensive medical bills (many insurers won’t cover preventable diseases if you skipped recommended vaccines).
There are also long-term consequences from infections like Hepatitis B or Rabies. By visiting a travel vaccine centre, you’re not just buying a jab, you’re buying peace of mind and protecting your health, your holiday, and your finances.
